Al-Shahrastani was born in 1086 CE in Shahristan, near the city of Nishapur in modern-day Iran, and died in 1153 CE. He was a prominent scholar of theology, philosophy, and religious history. A prolific thinker, he produced several influential works, including Nihayat al-Iqdam fi 'Ilm al-Kalam (The Furthest Steps in Scholastic Theology) and Musara'at al-Falasifah (The Struggle against the Philosophers). He received his education in the flourishing intellectual centers of his time, studying the Ash'ari school of theology in Nishapur. Later in life, he spent a period in Baghdad, where he served as a professor at the renowned al-Nizamiyya University. His deep understanding of both Islamic thought and the philosophies of other cultures uniquely qualified him to write a comprehensive and relatively objective survey of the world's religious traditions.
